Point Arena, Mendocino County--

A suspect has been identified in what the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office called a "savage beating" of a Point Arena man. Twenty-year old Joseph R. Smart was identified as the suspect.

On September 14, fifty-year-old Gerald G. Harris of Point arena was the victim of an assault that caused major head injuries. Harris, who was unable to identify his assailant, was just recently released from the hospital.

Yesterday, detectives working on the case identified Smart, a former tenant of Harris, as the suspect. But the suspect, who has been living in the Timber Cover, has apparently fled the area.

It is believed that Smart is now in the Sacramento Valley area, and a warrant has been sought for his arrest.

The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Smart to contact Detective Donald Miller at 707-964-6308 or call the Mendocino County Sheriffs Office, either at Point Arena (707-882-2331) or Ukiah (707-463-4411).
